Hello, i want to buy a new eyepiece, especially for better views of the hurcules globular cluster. I would like opinions from owners of either televues 2" 27mm panoptic eyepice or their 1.25 24mm panoptic eyepice. Thanks for your advice and clear skies.

If you are choosing between those two, don't forget there is a new 24mm Delos coming, it's TFOV will be right in the middle of the 24mm and 27mm Pans (according to astronomy.tools):

Similar views but the 27 is a 2" and will unbalance your dob.

M13 in an 8” Dob?

24 Pan I’d go with for the flatter field and slight increase in magnification. I’ve been told by others that the 27 Pan does have slight field curvature, but I’ve never looked through a 27 Pan. I own a 26NagT5.

Then you will love the Delos, it is 72 degrees

No, the new upcoming 24 Delos is 72 degrees FOV. You’re thinking of Ethos.

No worries! Yes, a few factors to count in…weight, field curvature, flat field, 2”-1.25” sizing, scope balance. I have an Orion XT8 Plus, the 24 Pan is one of my favorites to use in it.

If you go for the 27pan I recommend the TV equalizer so switching between 2" and 1.25" won't unbalance your dob.

Not the be the contrarian, but my best views of M13 are usually higher magnification, at least 100x. At a good dark site, you can really resolve some details. If your 8" Dob has a focal length of 1200mm, the 24mm Panoptic would provide 50x. Nothing wrong with this, I believe either of these eyepieces would be very fine choices. Maybe you already have decent medium power eyepieces like a 10-12mm?

Yes, the major difference is that a 2” allows for a wider field stop and thus a wider TFOV. 2” eyepieces are generally heavier and more expensive. There’s no downside to using 1.25” EPs, they’re just limited to a field stop that can only get so big, so the TFOV in a 1.25” eyepiece can only be so wide.

Oh definitely not a contrarian. I agree. The OP was kinda deciding between the 24 and 27 Pan. Me personally?…

…M13 is INCREDIBLE in a 10 and 13 Ethos.

Of the two the 24 will give a slightly better view of M13 because of the slight increase in power.

Neither of those 2 will give a better view of M13, you’ll get the best view with a higher power. I my 6” app which might have a comparable focal length to your dob (assuming 1200 mm) a 9 or 11 mm will give a tighter better view.

This is an actual view thru my 152.

I believe he means better than the plossl that comes with a dob. My best view of M13 in my 10" dob was 10mm Delos.

I agree. Whether with a dob or refractor, for M13 I always frame out at 10 and 13 Ethos.

Still, at 1200 mm a 9 to 14 mm eyepiece will frame M13 better.

I just said 10mm but that's not what he asked for. Everyone need a quality 24-30mm E/P.
