Why does GraXpert always flip my image top to bottom? How to stop it?

Hi,

GraXpert always flips my image from top to bottom and messes up the orientation. It isn't rotating it 180, it is actually flipping it to a mirror image view which is not the way the target exists in the real world.
Siril fortunately knows to change it back somehow, usually, but not always.

How do I stop GraXpert from flipping the image at all?
I don't see a setting anywhere for that.

Thanks!

Paul

I think it’s just flipping it for display. It doesn’t actually save it that way, if I recall.

Hi,

I have noticed it either way - sometimes it saves as mirror image and sometimes it does not.  Haven't been able to find a pattern for it yet.

But why would it flip it any way at any time at all?
It is like is it assuming we are using a refractor and it is trying to help my mirror-imaging the image?
I often see posts with mirror image final products - my guess is they are using GraXpert and not realizing what it is doing.

Thanks,

Paul

Yeah I have no idea.  It is annoying though!

Maybe you are taking your images upside down and just don't realize it?

So GraXpert is trying to fix it for you.

You could rotate your camera 180° and then when GraXpert is done it will be right side up.

If there is a right side up.

There is no N-S-E-W in space. So no Up or Down.

I think I'm getting car sick just thinking about it.

Hi PIE.

No, there is no up and down but that is different than mirror image. You can't fix a mirror image just by rotating it 180 degrees. That never works.

You can't rotate your right-hand palm facing you 180 degrees (or any other degrees) to look like your left-hand palm facing you. That is because they are mirror images, not just rotated.

My images are the proper orientation before they get to GraXpert per all the star charts and then GraXpert does a mirror image flip.

Thanks,

Paul

You didn't say Mirror image. You said top to bottom. poke.gif

Anyway, if it is how you like it, why use GraXpert?

What if you run it through GraXpert twice?

1st run comes out upside down,

Second run comes out right side up. lol.gif flowerred.gif

I'm a post processing minimalist. No smoke and no mirrors.

And why I use a rotator. Frames up the image the way I want to see it.

(Because, we will never see it in person.) waytogo.gif lol.gif

Umm...yeah I did say mirror image right in the 2nd sentence of my original post. waytogo.gif

I use GraXpert to denoise is that okay? smile.gif

Why use a rotator? Because it frames up the image the way I want to see it when shooting multiple targets while I sleep, and I am using an alt-az mount (GoTo dobsonian) so I also need it to avoid field rotation in my images..

Clear skies!

I believe it's all to do with how the image data files are written by the camera and subsequently read by whatever software you use. Some read top down and others bottom up, there's supposed to be a flag in the exif data which advises which to use. I guess sometimes the flag is missing or wrong or that some software just doesn't look for or use it correctly.
