Nice collection of images; this looks to be an example of the Wilson effect, discussed at pp 41-43 of Jenkins's book "Observing the Sun", caused by geometric perspective foreshortening.

Well aware of the Wilson effect thanks , whilst the main 'spot' in the AR remained largely consistent over the transit and shows the effect as expected as it left one limb and then approached the other it was the more unstable area to the left of the region that expanded and then fizzled out.

That’s great Steve! As little as the main spot changed you have to wonder if it might survive one more trip around.
