Registration is open for the 2025 Wisconsin Observer's Weekend at Hartman Creek State Park near Waupaca, WI.

One of the highlights of the year for area amateur astronomers and their families is the Wisconsin Observer's Weekend (WOW), hosted by the Northeast Wisconsin Stargazers. Amateur astronomers from all over the mid-west enjoy three days of summer camping and observing at Hartman Creek State Park just west of Waupaca Wisconsin. Whether or not you own a telescope or are a seasoned observer you will enjoy what WOW has to offer.

Hartman Creek State Park is 1,500 acres of post-glacial beauty located about 30 miles northwest of Oshkosh on the upper Waupaca Chain-O-Lakes. Visitors can enjoy camping, swimming, hiking, biking, picnicking, and fishing amidst the gently rolling woodlands, prairies, lakes and wetlands. Ten miles of hiking trails, including a segment of the National Scenic Ice Age Trail, offer plenty of opportunity to stretch your legs while enjoying numerous wildflowers and abundant bird life. The park also has designated off-road bicycling trails and low-traffic roads surrounding the area provide safe routes for the touring cyclist as well. Hartman Lake has a 300-foot sandy beach and swimming area for a cool dip after a hot day.

Thanks for the notification. I checked out the Harman Creek Park and they are now sold out RV spots for the dates of the Star Party, but maybe the Star Party has reserved those spaces for those joining the Star Party. How far a walk is it from the family campground to your observing field for the star party?  There is a map on the Hartman Creek Park website, but the Star Party location is not marked upon this map. Can you tell us the name of the campground site in this park, which will act as the observing field?

Take a look at the PDF “summer” map from the Hartman Creek Park website. At the top center, you’ll find the entrance road. Pass the entrance office, and make a right turn onto West Windfeldt Lane. From the family campground, it’s about a 1/2 mile walk to the group campgrounds where the star party is held.

The organizers have the group sites reserved - it’s explained here : https://new-star.org/wow-2024/
