Here's a thought.

I am thinking of replacing a 13mm Ethos with 14mm Type 7 Nagler.

Is this a good move?

Would performance improve with new coatings and maybe better polish?

I am not needing the 20mm eye relief at this point.

If I didn't have a need for glasses, I would absolutely not replace the Ethos with the N7s.

Early reports suggest the optical performance is on par with Ethos/Delos, which is an accomplishment already.

I think the proper way to think of the T7s is more ER than Ethos, and more AFOV than Delos.

The main benefit of a T7 over Ethos is eye relief. If you don’t need that there is no point to making the switch

I think a lot of people are going to want to fill that huge gap between their 17mm E and 21mm E with the new 19mm T7. Same with that gap between the 8MM E and 10mm E with the 9mm T7. Just joking of course but I have always thought it was weird that TV made the Delos and Ethos with the 6mm-8mm-10mm the same, and the Delites and the Nagler T6's being mirrored with the 5mm-7mm-9mm. I guess it's a choice between wide field or long ER vs really wide field and a bit wider field with long ER. Now with the 5.5mm and 9mm T7's we have actual wide field long ER. I feel like those two sizes might get more people interested than the 14mm and 19mm T7's, which being 2"- do they really compete with the 1.25" Delos, Nagler's or 13mm Ethos? I don't think people will be rushing to replace their 22mm T4's with the 19mm T7. The new 24mm Delos seems a bit of an odd duck too, with a field of view between the 24mm and 27mm Pan or 22mm T4, I guess if you need 3mm more ER than the 19mm the 27 Pan and 22mm T4 already has...

That's certainly my plan.

100 degree eyepieces are nice, but fatiguing.

70 degree LER eyepieces are comfortable but feel too narrow.

Hoping the T7s are just right, but there are only four focal lengths, and four focal lengths are not sufficient for my needs.

Yeah, 17mm to 21mm is a gap I rarely have ever seen a need to be filled. lol.

Agreed Tay (by the way, how are ya, Bud? Hope you’re well!)

I have a 5mm Pentax XW, there is a possibility for a replacement for the 5.5NagT7.

I have a 10mm Ethos. No need for a 9NagT7.

I have a 13mm Ethos. No need for a 14NagT7.

I have a 20NagT5…the 19NagT7 is the one sparking my interest as an improvement over the 20NagT5.

So, if I was to purchase any of the new Type 7s, it would be the 19 more than likely, with a possibility down the road for the 5.5 ocular.

I actively dislike LER and very much enjoy the hyperwide fields so there's only the loss of AFOV and the PITA of having to deal with the LER the T7's bring. So, no way.

Agreed havasman,

My happy place seems to be between 13-15mm of eye relief. Anything longer for me is wasted space and anything shorter than 12mm is a struggle, as 12mm seems to be my limit. I know this from the 20NagT5 I own.

That's silly, you adjust the eye guard and leave it, done. In cold weather longer E/R less eye lens fogging, less eye goop to clean.

Don't do it unless you need to wear glasses at that focal length.

Coatings are identical, polish is identical (Tele Vue has only one standard).

The T7 is lighter, if that matters.

When I previewed them, I found the 14mm T7 the best of all 4 (by a very narrow margin)**, but the 13mm Ethos is a fine eyepiece.

I would think you would not want to sacrifice 18% of the field width unless there is a distinct advantage to the T7 Nagler, and there is not.

Unless you wear glasses at the eyepiece.  If you did, the T7 is an option and the Ethos is not.

**12.5" f/5.75 scope (that is with Paracorr).

I do not wear glasses, but advancing age and cataract surgery made me uncomfortable with the shorter eye relief eyepieces. I replaced my 13mm Ethos with the Docter 12.5mm, the 10 and 8 Ethos with the 9mm Morpheus, and the 6mm Ethos with a Delos.  After trying these changes for a year, I passed my wonderful Ethos on to others who can better use and enjoy them.

Now after also enjoying the view through the TV Apollo 11, I have ordered a couple of T7 Naglers and expect them to give me the slightly wider field I like, with the same comfortable view.

Cheers,

Ron

Ron, please let me know how the new T7s are when you get them in. I have my eyes on the 19 for sure and possibly the 5.5. Hope you are well!
Don.

I have NO IDEA! You have me concerned now!

OH NO! WAIT! I have the 6.5-19.5 Pentax XF zoom! 40 Degree FOV AT 19.5.

Pfft! Won’t even notice a difference! lol.gif

Yes Saemark, the 20 NagT5 was discontinued in 2017 I think?

I'm not TV's target demographic, so, I'll be holding onto my Ethos for the time being.

Serious question about a “gap”:

I have the 31mm T5 (40x magnification in my AD10) and have ordered the 14mm T7 (89x).

Would you feel the need to have something in between?  The 19mm T7 would give me 66x.

I like LER — old eyes, cataract surgery, eyeglass wearer (though normally not at the eyepiece).

Consider a used 22 Panoptic...or the 24mm if you want a max 1.25" afov eyepiece.
