NGC 520 is a bright and highly distorted galaxy in the constellation Pisces, discovered by William Herschel in 1784.

NGC 520 is one of the handful bright tidal tails that are within the reach of typical big amateur telescopes. I've glimpsed the long tail with my 18-inch.

Nice choice Dave. I have only two entries in my log book for this galaxy. One negative in 100mm refractor and one positive in 130mm. I could see the galaxy in the larger refractor even from our lightly polluted backyard (~5.0 LNEM). At 120x, it was a small misty line elongated in NW-ES direction, it was hardly noticeable at 48x.

I need to revisit this one with the 16".

Agreed!  It was gorgeous in the 24 last year.  The dust lane divides the view nicely and the tidal tails clearly show what a cosmic train-wreck this Arp object is:

For some reason, I seldom wander around Pisces but this looks like a cool object to hunt down. Thanks for calling attention to it.

From Sept 4/11

12.5”

Good sized, rather bright, very elongated NW/SE, “blackish” brighter at NW end.

That’s from my Herschel 2500 logbook. If I wanted more about observing conditions & magnification I’d have to dig back into notes somewhere in a cupboard.

Bill
