In every video I have watched of the installation of the ZWO EAF focuser, it recommends leaving the orange ring and screwing the adapter on top of it. The only reasoning being this is because the focus knob can slide out. But when the focuser is connected, there is no way for it to slide out. Is there any other reason? Like dust maybe (the orange ring does not provide any sealing anyway)

I guess I don't understand your question. For me, keeping the focuser shaft from wiggling up and down the OTA axis is significant.
