Since it's been cloudy and rainy for days now, and it seems like it will continue until Friday or Saturday, I thought I'd play with some of the files from the 18th.

Here is a comparison between the usual processing (30s video, top 100-150 frames stacked) in the middle; stacking 20 snapshots using the DSLR full res (6000x4000 vs 1920x1080) on the left, and now taking a single snapshot and GIMPing it to death on the right. Surprising the latter did so well, given everything:

I think if you use a lighter sharpening level on the middle image that it and the 20 snapshots would look quite a bit alike.  The middle image definitely has the best contrast.

As a denizen of the often rainy Pacific Northwest, I can relate!

40mm of rain expected here both today and tomorrow!

Gary's middle image looks the best to me with the darkest filaments, but to my old eyes, resolution looks the same in all 3 and so even the single frame image seems to have all the detail and comes up okay thanks to the help of GIMP.

Thanks Warren, and agreed! My surprise was how much detail one could get out of a snapshot.

Thanks Foc! Like I said to Warren, the surprise (and reason for the post) was how much one could get out of a single snapshot. And remember, these were through a window with < average seeing to begin with.
