I recently found a trove of old magazines at a local antique store and could not resist quickly looking through.   "Last thing I really need is yet another old magazine", he says......

This one caught my attention because of the cover and then hooked me completely when I noticed a particular article inside.  I shelled out my three bucks and brought it home proudly.

And, of course, not an SCT in sight!

Nice find. I'm curious, how accurate was the "timetable to the moon" predictions?

Nice find. I'm curious, how accurate was the "timetable to the moon" predictions?

"Five steps to the first conquest of space would culminate in the landing of a manned vehicle on the moon in 2000 A.D. - give or take a few years."

Simply said, the article was not what I expected at all.  Thank god things didn't happen in-line with the article predictions!

More curious now?   This edition is available for free viewing/download on internet archive.  See page 102.

I would say "enjoy the read" but it doesn't seem fitting...you'll see......

Perhaps that would have been realistic if the project had proceeded slowly and systematically rather than being rushed due to considerations of national prestige. One wonders if the overall cost would have been higher or lower.

That seems like a fairly solid article that could be given out at any event today to prospective telescope buyers.

Good point, Tony. That’s if the “proposed” 1962 A-bomb step didn’t take out the moon completely. foreheadslap.gif

I agree.  If updated, which scopes would be in the opening picture now? Hmmmm.

Probably a bit of everything - dobs, frac's, SCT's - everything except for GEM mounted newts. Don't see too many of them nowadays.

Thanks for the link, Scott. Magazine duly downloaded and it's a fascinating read, irrespective of the Moon Landing article.

How to choose a puppy, dog ticks, how to stop your dog chasing cars and what science has done for your dog.

Interesting that the article starts around page 102 and then jumps to page 246.

I'll enjoy going through this carefully, looking at the adverts, especially for astronomy gear.
