Many of us in classics have bought items from Brian Dewelles to feed our hobby. I reached out to this long-time CN member for our June restart, and he was kind enough to share this about his background.
"Like many I started young in the hobby. My first scope was a great one, an Edmund Scientific 4.25 inch newtonian. I was in sixth grade. I'll never forget coming home from midnight mass on Christmas Eve and seeing the big boxes and putting it together.
An early memory was from 8th grade when my dad somehow got tickets to the second show ever at the brand new strasenburgh planetarium in Rochester NY, my hometown. The show obviously impressed with its big Zeiss projector because later in life I would start my own mobile planetarium, performing shows all over Arizona. In between I worked in the photographic industry.
One other thing about that show, in the planetarium lobby before it was to be installed in the Observatory behind the star theater sat a brand new 12.5 inch cave newtonian with all the bells and whistles. It was a donation from Bausch and Lomb. To me it was like seeing a Lamborghini or Maserati for the first time!
My favorite part of the hobby is outreach. One of the best things I have ever done was becoming a VIP or Volunteer In The Park. For three years every summer I would spend a month doing outreach. First at Capitol Reef NP UT. Then Black Canyon Of The Gunnison NP CO. and Great Basin NP in Nevada.Truly the experience of a lifetime. The dedication that the Interpretive and Law Enforcement Rangers provide is amazing. The parks now are committed to dark skies as a resource and we all benefit.
Like most I have a lot of scopes. I'll be 70 this summer and it's funny but I've never really gotten tired of telescopes or the hobby."
Thanks Brian for sharing this about yourself, your background and outreach efforts.A 10" Criterion? Wow,what a rare scope.
The basic guideline for this thread is to list ads and auctions for classic/vintage scopes and associated accessories that others may be interested in. Do not post your own ads or the ads of your friends, this includes items you may be trying to sell for someone else. We request that you do not post photos from ads. If you must have some reference to a photo in the post, post a link to the photo, not the photo itself. Concentrate on the item for sale, and not the seller.
Please post a live link to the item. Do not post "PM me for the link".Short discussions can take place about the items listed. When quoting a post, edit the quoted post to include only the part you are replying to. Do not post the entire ad text, or large blocks of it, without permission from the author. Keep on topic, please!
Buyer Beware- CN is not responsible for any of the ads or auctions posted here or their content. There are some scams floating around, so do your homework before pursuing any ad.
and this note from the moderators
Let's remember everybody, there's no one place that has all the best-used scope finds just as there's no one place that never has anything. All have something. No need to beat subjective matter, whatever the topic, into the ground. For the sake of all of us who love the classic forum, please keep moving the thread forward. Remember that many of your fellow forum members are already vintage themselves. Instead of restating your opinions over and over, consider sharing something new, insightful, or otherwise constructive to the topic at hand.Remember too please, there is no need for raining on other's parades.
