Ed Ting  scope giveaway! grin.gif Ends June 30th 2025. Continental US only, please. SVBony SV48P 4" f/6.5 Refractor OTA.   follow link.        scope looks like it may be good for moon, sun and DSO, maybe not the best for planet viewing, but for a free scope it could be a lot of fun if someone has a mount that will hold it steady. happy clear skies everyone grin.gif

I would truly chip in, as I really enjoy his videos, but I don't think he wants/needs another budget scope, seeing what he has laying around his house lol.gif lol.gif

I watch his videos too, he helps me sleep because he sounds monotone, lol

I wonder what his wife Mrs. Ed Ting said about all his scopes. He has omg ALOT.

As much as I let my husband have things his ways so he be happy, but if he has THAT much scopes, I would have a problem.

Like if you spend your time with your scopes and all those time doing image processing, when is your time for me kindda thing.

Does any Sir here actually know or meet Mr. Ed Ting in real life? I wonder how he is in real life. I can tell he is American born Chinese. He even listen to English France Opera, like Puccini Opera in one his video, I actually have to Google as I do not know who is Puccini.

I'm Chinese too and I only listen to old Chinese Opera, I guess that would be too Ancient China for Mr. Ed Ting taste, lol.

He seem Americanize, so I think he born here. He does speak English very well, I can't even string one sentence together properly, lol.

Ed Ting is a highly educated man, it appears.  He has an engineering degree from Urbana, an MFA from New England College, a MA in Liberal Studies from Dartmouth and a certificate in writing from Oxford.  He was a sales engineer as a career and it appears quite successful.  He is a great piano player.

I think he is charming and a real asset to astronomy.  I watch each new release and have followed him since his initial scope review page "back in the day".  I recommend this page wholeheartedly as it is an education in itself.

Never met him but would welcome the chance.

I haven’t followed him much, but in general he has a good grasp of the fundamentals and does a good job explaining things so beginners can understand. He is one of a relative few doing regular astronomy related videos, so the exposure can be a good thing. The only issue I have is his “Televue or nothing” opinion of eyepieces. When you look at his pictures of eyepieces, you see Televue eyepieces and vintage eyepieces. I suppose if you exclude modern designs like Morpheus, XW, SW, HW, then sure, it’s Televue or nothing. So people just have to remember he is just one person and everyone has their own opinions and biases. He even prefers his old 13T1 to his 13T6, which that alone makes me believe he isn’t particularly discriminating with eyepieces. So he has a platform and puts out a lot of helpful information, but I personally would look to CrazyPanda or Starman for opinions on eyepieces, not Ed.

I met Ed at Stellafane a number of years ago.

I find many of his videos to be very informative and well done.  However, his taste when it comes to eyepieces, as SeattleScott mentioned, is rather idiosyncratic.

There are certainly high-end alternatives to Team Green.

I've never met Ed, I've watched several of his videos. He does a good job, speaks clearly, professionally done.... I'm not part of his target audience and sometimes I disagree with his recommendations...

I like it that he's giving away the102 mm SV-48P. I give away scopes but do so in private.

I'd like a chance to compare it to my other 4 inch refractors, both ED/apos as well as other achromats I've owned like the ES AR102 and the Omni 102 mm F/6.5 which I still have access to. If I were to enter in the contest and actually win, I would ask Ed to draw a second name whom I would ship the scope to once I were finished.
