I'll be going out to Utah June 18th. for a 12 day photography vacation. This will be the 3rd. time photographing the Milky Way in Utah. I've photographed at Arches, outside of Monument Valley, Valley of the Gods & Capital Reef.

This year my first stop will be outside of Bryce Canyon for 2 nights then heading north up Scenic Byway 12 & staying in Escalante 2 nights before ending up at Capital Reef N.P. for 3 nights.

Right now the highlight of this adventure will be photographing Temples of the Sun & Moon at Capital Reef which I missed the last time I was there.

So, does anyone have suggestions on other locations for nightscapes in this general area. Goblin S.P. comes to mind.

This photo was taken at Capital Reef in August of 2018 with my Nikon D750, Nikon 20mm f1.8 lens, single 20sec. frame at f1.8, ISO1600. I used a bank of LED low level lights for foreground.

Have you checked out Kodachrome basin? It's in your area and also has some nice rock formations, but never looked at it in regards to the Milky Way imaging. But may be interesting? Do you have/use Photopills? If so see if there's anything decent in Kodachrome. At least look to see if Chimney Rock is a viable subject.

Oh there's another one that's not far from there, Grosvenor Arch. Not the best alignment for Milky Way core imaging but once upon a time I saw a great image of the full milky way arc with the Arch is a subject! It was a gorgeous shot (or so my memory remembers it as!

I did look at Kodachrome Basin online & will further investigate seeing it's close to Bryce. I never heard of Grosvenor Arch & will check it out also. Yes, I do use Photopills......Thanks for the info, Al.

There are near limitless possibilities and it's hard to go wrong. Spend some time on google earth and find other photos you like.

I've spent so many years imaging around the area since I was born and raised here, been doing nightscape imaging for 11 years now. Really just depends on what kind of compositions you like, there's so many places to image between Bryce and Capitol Reef. My wife created a new version of our website and organized many of our shots by location, you can peruse the various shots we've done and I can give recommendations on specific compositions/locations if you'd like:

Hi Eric & thanks for the excellent response. Both Bryony's & your images are fantastic & I'm a bit overwhelmed by your work (like a kid in a candy store). Your wife did a great job with the website.

As far as compositions go you gave me a lot to think about. I mentioned Temple of the Sun & Moon which will be my top priority but you've given me ideas at Bryce, Escalante & Goblin's.

By the way, I love Bryony's photo "Grand Tetons at Jenny Lake". I camped there back in 2017 & wanted to get a nightscape image with Moulton's barn but it never materialized.

Thanks again......Al.
