Does anyone know of a way to increase the image download rate for RAW16 or SER?

Currently getting 0.2FPS and need around 2FPS at fastest exposures. From research it seems with a fast card the camera should do 1FPS at full resolution. Not opposed to using magic lantern with a 512gb sd or sacrificing resolution or tearing the camera appart for some hardwire soldering?

It has great sensitivity and extremely low noise and would like to experiment with fast exposure DSO to see how it fares. That's not going to happen with 4s download times. Live view gets 6.5FPS in RGB24 & resolution of up to 960x640. I dont think thats useable either.

Open to any ideas or modifications.

Personally I wouldn't do lucky imaging with DSLR, or maybe with Magic Lantern where you dont use shutter or with mirrorless camera (same reason).
So get/use a dedicated astro camera.

Obviously I'm going to disregard that great advise. wink.gif

I just want to believe that someone has hacked it apart and found a faster way for image download. Working up the courage to do the naked sensor mod on it.

Read/write and transfer rate speeds are a limitation of the camera hardware for the most part. By the time you get done hacking away at it (providing you had the precision needed to do some manual soldering alterations), you'd be money ahead to get a dedicated camera with a USB3 interface. Good luck.

Check your USB cable and port on the computer. I haven't used it in a while, but I think I got better than that when I was using my 6D for AP. That said, I would expect that storing it on the camera chip would be noticeably faster, if you have a fast chip.

Make sure that you don't have any high iso or long exposure noise reduction turned on on the camera. This may make it take longer to do the download because it will actually try to take a long exposure for the dark frame before it actually lets you download anything. Beyond that make sure that you're plugged into at least a USB 2.0 port and that you have a proper cable that's not too long because that will actually cause it to run slower or not run at all. Best suggestion would be a USB 3.0 port with a proper cable to plug into your camera with the cameras only USB 2.0 but it will still benefit from the better cable and the better port speed.

Magic lantern is doing 0.5FPS for 1s exposures with the mirror locked up.

Sandisk extreme 256gb microsdxc is supposed to be 200MB/s read speeds and 140MB/s write speeds.

Not so bad when doing long exposures. But here it effectively halves my airtime. It's just an experiment, so part of the fun I guess.

Another thing to consider is your PC's chipset drivers. Chipset drivers will usually come with a set of USB 2.0 and below drivers automatically included. USB 3.0 and above you'll probably need a separate driver for that make sure these are up to date with the latest version otherwise the system will use the Microsoft default drivers which tend to be slow and or lack features. Also in the device manager make sure that power management settings for USB devices is turned off. If it's turned on this may restrict data rates and or could power the device down when it thinks it's not in use.

Thank you. Found the power management in device manager. It was active. Testing this today to see if there's any change. Windoze 11 is so pretty but either i'm losing my edge or it just doesn't come together as an OS.

This is 2fps video work well.

500m/s exposures @ 6400 ISO.

Effectively an astro camera without the cooling.
