Hello,

I have an upcoming trip to Grand Canyon and I am having a tough time while deciding between the two scopes for packing. The two scopes are similar in aperture, but the ST120 has a much wider field of view and I can actually see the Veil nebula and NA nebula in its entirety. But, I need to pack a beefier mount (Wave 100i) and a heavier tripod (goes in a second checking bag) and 2" eyepieces for it which is kind of tough for airplane travel. I need a tracking mount because there is an outreach event over there. I was able to remove the dew shield and now the OTA packs comfortably in my backpack. With C5, I think it has a similar deep sky performance and I can just pack my az gti mount with the OTA in my backpack, but, I will miss the wide field views. So I am guessing no NA nebula and veil Nebula for me. I can carry an 8x42 binos with me. Based on the experiences of all of you, what do you think I should do: leave a lot of personal stuffs at home and pack my ST120 in the limited space or just carry a C5 with azgti and a pair of binos because I will still get to see a lot of non wide field stuffs.

C5 with the f6.3 compressor is almost as wide.

If the seeing is good over there: C5
If the seeing is mediocre over there: the refractor will give a better image and you should make a list what you would leave home to take it with you.

From the dark in the West you may find new potential for galaxy observing with the C5. Widefield observing is better with the Milky Way in full view but it's still galaxy season for much of the night.

The transparency forecast seems excellent. Seeing not so much. Its more like mediocre. I have a .63 reducer which I can use and get about 2 degrees. Thanks for all your opinions.

How bad is manual tracking with slo mo controls on an alt az mount though for outreach?
