Well, I was so hungry for some observing that I Got up early. At this time of year, this meant that the sun was bearly clearing my roof. The results were not that good as you can see in the shot just below:

gallery_132294_29377_1383264.jpgThis is clearly at the bottom of the quality I usually produce.

So I kept the scope out to get some shots closer to max altitude of the sun(and away from my roof). I was rewarded with an M8.4 class solar flare. Not too shabby for my return to observations! :) Man I can't wait for retirement when I'll have more than just weekends to observe. The last 5 weekends were either rainy or overcast. Glad I could get the bottom two shots Today (same shot, but one colorised).

Looking at the Gong images, that prom opposite the flare on the lower right limb, appeared at the very same time and was a short lived. Kind of intriguing!

I watched that flare throughout the day with my 80 Lunt SS.  Probably the biggest flare I have ever seen.  Glad you caught it so I can remember it!  Thanks for sharing.

There is a phenomenon called Sympathetic Solar Flares whereas if two areas are connected by a magnetic field, if one happens to flare it can then cause the other area to flare nearly the same time.  Typically there is a slight delay from the beginning of one to the other.  I have done some animations where it appears like a chain reaction going from one AR to the next.  Typically the initial flare being the most intense.

Ah, I just made a beginners post on this... that great first witness of something rapid developing on the sun... very lucky, only a brief moment of sun but the ls60mt was on its mount and tripod in the garage so I had a look! Always observe the sun unless you got a good reason for not to! No chance to rig cam, love you catched it!
