Like oil paint, the lead in optics is of little concern to the user. It's a problem for the manufacturer via waste disposal.

There is plenty of lead still used on roofs etc.

For many lead paint and lead optics respectively remain the painters and photographers dream.

I need to buy a geiger counter to check if any of my old optics emit radiation. More binoculars and camera lenses.

Very interesting Richard.

Although to my knowledge the refractive index of Fluorite is very similar to FPL53 - much lower than Lanthanum (or lead glass).
