Did not see a post yet about my favorite upcoming star party in the panhandle of Oklahoma. Lets get the hype going! Last year (2024) other than a little wind the weather was perfect. Hoping for the same but preparing just in case.

See the link above for more details but here are a list of just a few of some of my many pros for this star party:

  • Bortle 1 skies
  • They allowed leashed dogs. I travel everywhere with my dog and will not go to a lengthy star party where I cannot bring her. If your dog is loud or aggressive please leave at home and always clean up after it.
  • So many nights to get to know new friends that can understand so many more astronomy words than you family. I have met so many people during the night and then recognize the voice in the day and finally see what they look like.
  • The diversity of rigs from visual to astrophotography is amazing. Also the willingness to share the nuisances of special techniques or why they chose specific options helps brain storm so much.
  • Things to do: State park nearby, hiking, volcano, 2 x three state corners sites, highest point on Oklahoma, killing flies in the mess hall, or just great conversations.

What are some of your pros?

This will be my first time at OTSP since the Lake Murray days almost 40 years ago!  I'm excited to step foot back in my home state.  I also look forward to meeting some OKC Astronomy Club members and wonder if some of the younguns I ran with back in the day are now elder statesmen of the club.

One pro:  It's a long star party with plenty of nights to observe.  Losing one or two to weather won't be catastrophic.
