21 June Canberra

In Canberra it was down to 17.6 Fahrenheit overnight, that shorts weather for some of you lot but pretty cold for us in Oz.  And today was the shortest day of the year and much of that time was on family errands.  But during the time I had to image, there were moments of decent seeing, some of them wasted (as you can see) while I tried again,to extend the sweet spot in my DS Lunt over a barlowed suns full disc but a decent haul still as that big filament was still there.

Now having used double barlows a few times for fun, this time I offer one of the better double barlow images, scaled down in size  and underneath a single barlow image with less scaled shrinkage. They are very similar and I felt  both images have something to offer (if only due to the differences in cropping and orientation and possibly focus and tuning). Although it is certainly not at all a careful scientific comparison for what its worth, I think technically the single barlowed image looks the better.

Still went with the double barlows for white light

Wow! I didn't realize it ever got that cold in Oz!

Another single barlowed effort with the DS80mt Lunt andfor whitelight  the  Vixen SF80 with Lunt Herschel Wedge (image scaled down a lot) each using the 1.6x barlow/

I could easily be accused of crassly ignoring 4114 in Ha but even that brighter area of activity did not make any inspiring images for me so I fit it into this wide angle shot.

Finally the double barlowed white light images using a 1.5x barlow on a 2.25x barlow with the Vixen SF80 and in all images in todays post used the ZWO 533mm camera,

These images came out a little better than my previous one and helped make the Winter Solstice Cool,    but my double barlowed efforts are still not ideal in appearance so I have put in a request for larger sunspots, that being cheaper than a larger scope,

It does not help my evaluation of my WL images that I imagine that spot 4115 looks a lot (if you double click to enlarge this image)  like a small squashed cockroach!  Edit - brightened the images a little as okay on solar brightened laptop but looked dark on my phone

Absolutely Gary, I still have a powermate I have not worked into the optical train!

Still, I need to take occasional care with my messaging as do not want to lead any newer imagers astray with the expectation that in multiplying barlows on small scopes with smallish pixel cameras it ensures that they get images that are not only bigger but better!  graduate.sml.gif

Great shots Foc!  You can bet I'm not wearing shorts at 17.6F!  At first I thought you meant 17.6C being from down under and I thought, yeah, I'd be in the pool at those temps! lol.gif

Absolutely, although I have toyed with this idea:

Thanks everyone for your likes, quite warming after another night down to 17 degrees Fahrenheit and a feeble sun arising to low heights.

And on Gary's post above with the monstrous multiple Barlow's, at least Gary has them all the same barlow type (how did you get so many?).

My Barlow's all vary in their convexity and surface coatings and thus require me to do a maniacal Dr Frankenstein laugh when I hook them up and scream.."Let there be light!"
