Buying this Svbony 80mm ed f7 as a guide scope. It looks like the lens was cleaned with something other than what's supposed to be used. Heavy swirl marks. The owner has a little language barrier so info isn't easy to get. I don't see any scratches. Would this be a pass?

If you’re just using it as a guide scope and can get it cheaply enough then it may still be worth it. Definitely don’t pay a premium price for it though.

In my experience of buying used equipment, those swirls are residue, and will clean off. I've bought scopes that looked worse, but cleaned up very nicely.

It seems to be residues of oily substances smudged during "cleaning". I believe a new and proper done cleaning will remove them. Try using acetone but before anything, make a test using a small drop over a cotton swab in a very small area, usually good coatings have no problem with acetone. Why acetone? Because is one of the best oil film removers!
Sure you can also try isopropyl alcohol with some acetone drops, for a less aggressive cleaner!

The smudges look like canned air propellant. It should clean off IME. Good luck! fingerscrossed.gif

I've had similar marks on a lens when I used a cloth that wasn't as clean and grease-free as I thought it was. With some more careful cleaning using a fresh cloth and suitable lens cleaning solution, the glass ended up looking as good as new.
