I really like this picture that I got out in Arkansa in a bortle 2.5 sky but I feel like its not as good as it could be. I was trying pretty hard to get the reds from the nebula in the core of the Milky Way to pop and I can't seem to figure out how to fix it with out making everything else look weird. If you notice any other problems with the image that can be fixed or make better in post processing let me know. I just want advice to get better.

How was it processed?  If we know, we can help better.

I totally forgot to add that, I meant to lol. I stacked it in Siril and then took it into graxpert where I did background extraction and some denoising. Then I too it back into siril and did some very light stretching and color calibration, as well as green noise removal. Then I removed the stars and took both the star mask and starless into gimp where I did the final stretching. I also did a selection of only the milky way and brought some more very light contrast and did lots of saturating. After that I added the stars and got the whole image to a darkness that I liked but I feel like it could be more then what I have since I'm still very much a begineer and this isn't a complicated processing ruotine. And like I said I've really struggled to get the reds out and I have been scratching my head trying to figure it out.

How did you stretch in Siril?

I did an initial very light stretch just enough to see some small details and then pulled the black point down, not enough to clip data tho. And then I did another very light stretch, just enough to see the gas in the band. It was all done with the generalized hyperbolic historgram stretch and a black point stretch.

My recommendation for assistance:

  • Post the raw files and see what others can make from it.
  • Pick your favorite result and ask that person what steps they used

+1 CharLakeAstro.

Since OP is new here, here is a pointer to the Process My Data thread:

It does look like you stretched a lot of noise in your starless image.  If you had Pixinsight, I would recommend some BlurXTerminator and NoiseXTerminator before separating your stars.  Not sure what the equivalent is for Siril.  BlurXterminator could also help with your star shapes and trailing.  If you can’t remove the noise before stretching, alternate between linear and curve stretching to keep adjusting your black level down as you stretch.  Stretch a little on the curve, go back to linear and reset your black level, and stretch a little bit more, repeat until you get a starless image that is only the Milky Way and less noise in the rest of the image..
