Mag ? 6.5

This evening I got my second look at Comet C2006 M4 SWAN it is brighter than last time maybe 6.5 a defined bright center with lots of nebulous material all around it. Not easy to see an tail but in my binoculars it was or seemed to be brighter toward my left looking at it tonight, happy to see it again. SWAN looked very well below and in the same fov as Seginus or Gamma Bootes.

Earlier I had a look at it in my Sky Watcher 200mm with a 25mm Meade eyepiece and it looked, well the main bright point within it looked defined still hard to see a tail or even the direction the material was headed or the shape of the material. My 9V went in my red light, what a pain, I grabbed the only other torch in the house.

Of course it was one of these million candle jobs from the garage, who needs a million candels to draw in the dark. I shoved it in a bush backward to take the glare off it, so I could at least see my dots/stars.

Headed to the shop in between my first and second sketch for 9V the telescope was dripping wet and so fogged up. What a wet country we have here, but still its great to see a comet and to follow one, there is so much to learn in the following.

Have to check out the stars for my Sky Watcher sketch, tried the 8mm TVP no good, tried the 10mm Kellner no good, 25 mm Meade was best tonight, and the binoculars were really good.

Great job, Dee. And your report has put a smile on my face. It's the kind of thing that happens to me.

Your sketches are superb! And I really like the named stars too. You should consider submitting your report and sketches to http://www.spaceweather.com/

Off to the right hand side of the page is a link for submissions. Tony has been following the progress of this comet the past several days for us. Your sketches would be very useful for everyone.

Wonderful report and beautiful sketches Dee! :D Your story about the dead red light battery and the million candle flashlight had me chuckling because I've had that happen to me before. The "bush filter" is something I hadn't heard of in the past, quite a creative solution!

Nice sketches, Dee. What is the FOV?
I observed SWAN with the 10x50's on 18 Oct. about 20 hours before your observation. I guesstimated it to be about 3 degrees SE of Gamma Bootis. I couldn't see it very well because my eyes hadn't adjusted from watching the ISS pass over at a magnitude in the negative numbers.

Following a comet is fun--This one moved about 15 degrees in the four days between my two observations.

fov is field of view http://en.wikipedia....i/Field_of_view

I just mean in my Binoculars in the same view I could see exactly what I have sketched, from the top to the bottom within one circle.. FOV is printed on my SkyMasters as 4.4 degrees.

and yes it is fun to follow a comet, hope it stays visible for a while.
