Hello,

Anyone have a clue where I might find one of these finderscopes?

JW,

I have a similar one on my Meade 4 inch and it's really nothing more than a "classic" 50mm ota with a r&p focuser.
I'd assume a erecting prism with a 20mm or so eyepiece with crosshairs will get you 25x.

Unfortunately a lot of the 50mm scopes like the Tasco are bolted on the side of the ota so some patching would be needed. Unless you get a scope like a Bushnell, Swift that has a cradle like the one pictured. But I've not seen one in white as above.

Hi Jae,

I found a 50mm f/12 Sans&Streiffe refractor with a single sided focuser yesterday. Hopefully that will do the trick for the time being.

Thanks,

JWW,
That sounds like quite a telescope. There was a Palomar on Ebay a month or so ago and then it suddenly disappeared. I was watching it and wanted it. The seller never replied when I asked why he removed it.-Ken

Hi, I thought you might like to see a telescope that I have. It is the same as the one in your attachment. The finder is a great little telescope in itself. I replaced the 25mm eyepiece with a 40mm for wide field viewing. The main tube is a magnificent telescope with exceptional performance given its an achromat. The setup packs into a wood box similar to my 102mm and 60mm Unitrons.
All the best with your new finder.
Regards Mark

Hi Mark,

Oops, looks like I should read before I post. Looks like you have the Yamamoto to me ...... sweet? Sure would like to see some closeups of the finderscope when you have time. I assume it's the original mount? Do you have the original wooden tripod? Mind me asking where you found it and how long you've owned it?

I have (2) OTA tube rings like the one on your OTA, but no mount or tripod. The optics are great, for what it is. I was told that mine was used as a guidescope in a observatory, as I was trying to track down the rest of the components. I haven't been able to find a single thing about the scopes background and I have search pretty extensively.

Here's a image of the Palomar OTA with a set of SocalAstro tube rings attached and without the dew shield.

Hi JWW,
The mount is original, but is carried a pier instead of the wood tripod. The pier was supplied with the telescope and also stores in the wood box with the telescope tube. I have adapted a non original RA drive to the mount.
The setup was purchased about 2 years ago from the original owner, a gentleman in New Zealand, and I had it shipped to Australia. The telescope is 26 years old. I have a 76mm FL1400mm (f18.4) telescope marked SYW inside a diamond. Its magnificent. When I came across this 108mm f1600 in New Zealand, and saw the SYW trademark, I jumped to purchase hoping for performance like the 76mm. I was not disappointed.
I have seen the SYW trademark on tubes engraved Palomar (101mm), Satellite (108mm), Skymaster (108mm), and Sport Master (108mm) on my version. The Y in SYW likely relates to Yamamoto manufacturing.
The Cloudy Nights posting at
shows an advertisement with my pier mounted arrangement. Hope that long link works? Really Long Link

Hi JWW,
All the SYW telescopes that I have come across (60mm up to 108mm) have the same type of machining on the focuser knobs. The larger aperture telescopes have larger diameter knobs but of the same shape. Main tube focuser engraving is below.
Thats great set of Newtonian tubes in the background of one of your previous photos!

If you go to the edit page, there is a box with various options you can use in your message next to the graemlins. One of them is URL. That is for putting long links in your message. Please try to use that.

Hi Don, Thanks for the tip and tidying up that awfully long link. As a novice in the excitement of posting, I had not seen that facility.

This pup arrived today ... it should do the trick (for me). It's a Sans&Streiffe 50x50 in very nice shape.

Mark,

Would it be possible for YOU to trace your finderscope tube rings on a piece of paper and send me the tracing? I have a machine shop in my hope and would like to make something very like the ones on your scope.

Hi JWW,
I can trace the rings for you, but I should explain that to get the tube into the rings, either the focuser assembly or lens cell is unscrewed from the tube, so that the clean tube end will fit through the rings. The tube also has two separate protective rings which slip over the tube to prevent marring of the tube by the collimation screws. I can photograph these also if you wish.
Your new Sans and Streiffe looks excellent.
Mark

Hi Mark,

If you don't feel comfortable taking the rings off the OTA -OR- if it is a hassle, I totally understand. It would just make it easier for me to make them. If a photograph is easier, that's fine too. Some dimenions would be great, well enough so I can build from them, along with the photographs.

Sincerely,
-JWW:

Oops ...

So YOUR finderscope OTA configuration is much like a Unitrons 60/700mm guidescope which requires Uniclamps and guide scope rings (like the scope on the right below)?
