Finally found the time to process my secondary data set of the Rosette from this winter (2021-22) with only Hα and Oiii subs.
I went for a drastic crop on this one focusing only on the core region.

I always thought of the structures as animals (leaping cat, elephant, giraffe etc.), thus the title.

Dominik,

What blending did you use to get the wonderful palette of colors? I really like the transition from an orange-y red through yellow, with a hint of light green, into blue and even some light violet!!! Did you process in PI or another program?

Fantastic job!!

Thanks!

I started from the ForaxX blend for the green channel:

((Oiii*Ha)^~(Oiii*Ha))*Ha + ~((Oiii*Ha)^~(Oiii*Ha))*Oiii

But I added custom weights as well and applied different stretches to arrive at the result.
There's no final formula, it always depends on the data and the applied stretches.

The processing was done in PI, I finalized the palette in PS (tone mapping).

Thank you for sharing this Dominik!! Completely understand the end result is really the artistic part, with the right weights, blending, and stretching. You did a very nice job on this data.

Cheers!!

..... into blue and even some light violet!!!

I hate to burst your bubble but violet is not on the RGB color wheel. There are no two colors you can combine to get violet. The human color visual system can be fooled into seeing a color as something it's not. I opened the image in Photoshop to see what color those "violet" areas really were. They were very pale blue.

Thanks!

Is "~" meaning reciprocal invented by PI? I've never seen that before and no page I could find listed it as a math operator. I did see it listed to mean "similar" or "weakly approximate." I also saw it listed as "negation" or "not."

In PI it‘s not the inverse but the complement/negation, meaning „1-…“.

Great work, Dominik! I love the subtle detail you were able to bring out in the parade of animals.
