Anybody have a chance to really test these eyepieces?

I found this review and they sound very compelling:

http://astronomyconn...r-eyepieces.36/

I don't regularly use magnifications and exit pupils as small as they give, but the 2.4mm gives 375x with my scope and I have been able to use magnifications as high as 525x with my 120mm ED so the 2.4mm FL might be worth looking at.

How about the eye relief comfort?  I would not need my glasses at that exit pupil but is that a comfortable 10mm of eye relief?

Dave

And there are threads on the German Forum Astronomie.de, and the Australian Forum Ice In Space, etc.

One of the above is a review of the 2.4mm.

Most of us hope Vixen will produce longer focal lenghts.

It is interesting about the HRs as they came across as really comfortable with an easy exit pupil to hold with their 10mm of ER.  The TV Nagler 2-4 and 3-6 both I always felt was very tight and always had to fold down the eye guard.  Even so, it still felt tight.  Maybe the eye lens in that is concave?  I don't know I forget as no longer have them.  But the HRs even with the eye guard up were simply comfortable.  I imagine if I took the eye guard off they would have felt even better!

Bill,

I did not get a chance to fully read the article you wrote; however, how many nights did you attain where the sky was suitably stable for testing and over what period of time did you run your tests?

I have the 1.6 and 2.0 HRs.  If I didn't already have a 2.58 XO, I'd probably go for the 2.4 HR as well.

I've only had a chance to use the 1.6 so far.  It gave me very sharp double-star splits with good color saturation.  I especially liked the presentation of Lambda Ophiuchi through my C80ED.

IME, these eyepieces are best for double star and planet viewing.  I can see using them especially for Mars and Saturn.  I have too many eye floaters to try them for lunar.

My plan is to insert the 1.6 HR, 2.0 HR, 2.58 XO and 5.1 XO in a Baader turret for double stars.  That will be a nice grab-n-go setup for the C80ED.  When I have more time, I'll use them in my SW120ED.

Mike

I just tried the 2.4mm and 2.0mm on the moon with my TV Genesis SDF, and all I can say is WOW! Great contrast, sharpness without distortion. The 2.4mm was the perfect in the F/5 refractor in my crappy skies at 208x, and 2.0mm was too much for this night at 250x.

I didn't get a chance to compare it to my 2.5mm N6 or any of my Deloi (3.5mm with the 1.8x Powermate, 4.5mm with the 2x Barlow, 6mm with the 2.5x Powermate, and the 10mm and 14mm with the 5x Powermate) or Ethoi (3.7mm, 4.7mm, 8mm, and the 13mm) because the clouds rolled in.

Hi,

I got lucky these last few days, trying several afternoons in a row : Venus, on my Tak FC-100DL and the Vixen HR 2.4... The great thing about catching Venus during the day is that my retina is rather small, therefore, the small exit pupil of this focal length 2.4 mm is acceptable and usable. What a nice and confortable eyepiece, high magnification, very crip views, no CA, I could even barlow it for a while, but then the sky turbulence was the limiting factor, yet it was possible and enjoyable... and a bit crazy I confess :-D !

I sold my XO 2.5 mm because this Vixen HR does the job just as well, equally to me eyes at least, with a lot more confort of use ! I got it from Don when on sale, best deal of the year for my eyepiece case, it's a keeper !

Stunning views on the Moon last night and on Jupiter with this little Vixen HR, the GRS had great colors and the Europe hide and seek moment was nice to look at. When do they start making longer FL's ? :)
