Hi all,

here's a mars sketch from last monday morning. unlike others in Belgium who experienced exceptionally good seeing earlier that night, i had very poor seeing conditions that morning.
it was really difficult to make out much, but some dark regions, the NPC and 2 brighter patches were visible.

Quite realistic, Kris. I enjoy your rendition which shows the seeing conditions rather well. Despite this you managed to reveal quite a bit from the surface. Very good observation!

Superb Kris.
I didn't know your internet site yet, whaw your planetary technique is top level. I observed Mars two nights before with my 12" 'Dob, the good sky I have here South France doesn't help me to make such quality sketches!

Nice sketch. You did well to get that much detail regardless of conditions.

thanks for the kind words everyone.

while i was checking the images at the CMO site i found this observation by Frank Melillo at nearly the same c.m. (9 vs. 17) which closely represents the view i had. apparantly his picture was also shot under poor (3/10) seeing conditions.

it's not really a fair comparison, but this is pretty much how I see Mars under bad seeing (perhaps a little crisper)

Aquarellia: where'd you get that fantastic detailed light pollution map from on your site?

I want one too  just to show how bad off we are!

Good sketch Kris. I like your use of color. Looks like the apodizing mask made good on a night of marginal seeing.

Dean: yes the apodizing mask is definitely capable of upgrading the seeing a notch. I'd recommend it to anyone who observes the planets, and it's easy and cheap to make yourself!

Michel: thanks for the link! wonderful! please enjoy this image of my observing location as a token of my appreciation
(It's the white crossmark in the middle of Ghent, Antwerp and Brussels.)
