Hi Ajay,

Was looking for information on Table Mountain and saw your posts and figured it was you. Now I know where you hang out!

Cheers,

Welcome Doug.

Everyone, meet Doug Munday. We run into each other at TAS meetings. Doug's also an imager.

We drink wine to taste the sunshine of bygone summers. Getting a good vintage is hard work. The reason I put up with all the frustrations of imaging is that I get to tease out the starlight from bygone nights. Here's something from last spring's OAS Star Party at Camp Delaney.

Doug, welcome to our friendly local asylum! :)

I really like that view in Leo, Ajay. I followed the link to your "largest" view. It's so tantalizing, because a guy can on close inspection see hints of so much more, just on the edge of visualization.

Have you ever soaked up photons from the Markarian's Chain area?

Anne, my mom & I saw the movie "Lincoln" Sat. morning and I can *highly* recommend it.

Nice Ajay! I'm kind of feeling hosed with the current weather... I had hoped that a trip to Winthrop might result in some Data to play with, but it's no better on the east side :bawling:.

I went to the Red Hot Chili Peppers on Thursday night at Key Arena. Pretty amazing and fun! (other than hating driving into Seattle )

Rain rain rainrinrainrainrain............

The old Belfair hwy washed OUT. I heard it is still usable but so much material washed over it it is damaged in several places. Also I heard Gorst will be closed...with one lane in and out. Hwy 16 is dangerous in that area. Any my wife got into a wreck....simply leaving our driveway as a city service truck ran into her....boy...

What nasty weather. Hope you all stay dry.

Maybe it's because I bought a new telescope? It was supposed to be clear here the day I received it, last Wednesday, but I have not seen a single star since I opened the box. BTW it's a C6 to go onto my Super Polaris mount. I miss my C8 and equatorial mount, but the C8 was a bit too large for it. The C6 appears to be just the right size to make it a carry out.

Almost 7 inches of rain here since yesterday mid day. Water is running everywhere. It seems to be letting up now so hopefully the waters will recede a bit before the next deluge. Our roads are holding up so far.

So I got to digging around a found an image from 2011 that I shot up at Slate Peak. A very wide image of M51 taken with a QHY9 color ccd connected to my AT65. 27 x 5 minutes. includes the SN2011dh. a couple of dust motes near the top.. but lots of little fuzzies in the image.

full resolution- http://astrob.in/full/25281/ 4mb or so

Thank you Emery, Mike and Robert. Yes there are several more faint galaxies in there. Don't know if they are in the NGC. I got he IDs by submitting my picture to a plate solving program known as astronomy.net. Here's a more traditional map of the area: http://www.atlasofth...lgrps/leoi.html

Markarian's chain is on my to-do list. I think Ram mentioned once that he had imaged it. I like the stark view of these galaxy fields.

We had some downed trees and power lines near GRCC but no power outage at the college.

Hang in there. This can't last forever.

yes lots of water. Stay safe!

Robert your little scope and skills never ceaces to amaze me!!

I was down towards GRCC tonight to pick up some Fujinon 7x50 binos. Got a good deal but so many offers the price went up on the way over. Second time this month that has happened. :(

Oh well, guess I need to drive faster. :ubetcha:

Oddly - after all that downpouring, it cleared last night at my house. By 10 pm I was set up and viewing crystal clear skies from my back pourch. I stayed out enjoying Jupiter, Pleiades and several Auriga clusters. At first seeing was terrible, then I had about a 30 minute widow of very steady seeing. I packed it in at 11:15, and when I looked outside at 11:30 it was pouring rain!

That happened here as well Steve. My wife and I have some kind of flu right now so I didn't set up at all. I did get a chance to use binos a bit though.

Good job Steve!

I got out last night with binos purchased 1 hour earlier (after driving to Auburn in the driving rain). I should win something for that! :)

The binos were misrepresented so I was a sucker looking through a sucker hole!

Robert, That looks nice.

The reason we are often surprised by how many faint objects small scopes can reveal in images is that by intuition we compare it to what we see in the eyepiece. Large integration times and sensitive CCD chips make the imaging magic ( as Mike calls it) possible, but the drawback of course is that resolution of these smaller instruments is poor.

This image with an integration time of 2 million seconds(!) taken with a 2.4 m telescope shows 5500 galaxies. The 10.4 m Keck twin scopes each with 18.8 times the area of the smaller scope can only dream of revealing so many galaxies.

That's quite a view, Ajay, which I've marveled at before. It's surprising to me how many of those really old galaxies have structure, as opposed to simple elliptical, homogeneous composition.

No, that was a long, wet drive. Everybody knows the rules, it's buyer beware. He probably thought they were Posedion, but they turned out to be Nautilus (Fujinon), worth several hundred less. Still a bargain, so I didn't even call him. Also kind of an oddity because they are Fujinon binos, made in USA. Actually more like "assembled" in the USA, but still kind of cool. I will play with them for awhile. :)
