I am considering purchasing this mount for a small refractor. Is anyone aware of any significant issues with this mount? I have been reading reviews and they seem pretty good.
If need be, the software can be user updated, right?
I understand that Celestron will be coming out soon with a newer version or maybe a different designation called "VX." Are their any deals on the mostly likley soon-to-be discontinued CG5 Goto?
Thanks

Amazon and OpticPlanet.com and probably others still have the CG5 for sale but the price is on the $650 to $700 range. It may be better to get the replacement VX ordered for just $100 more. Either should work well with a small reflector.

There are some niggling design issues that the VX addresses, but overall, the CG5 is a great little mount. If the CG5 HC has version 4 firmware or later it can be upgraded. The CG5-GT I got new in early 2011 had v4.16; 4 has been out for a while, but don't know how long.
If the VX fixes as many of those things as it looks like it does (better power switch, thread-on power connector, more sensible arrangement of motor covers and dec cable) and it performs as well as early reports indicate, expect a flood of CG5s to hit the used market. astronomics (neotesla's link above) shows CG5 in closeout at a price $250 less than the VX pre-order price.

I bought mine a few days ago after seeing the closeout price at astronomic s. Absolutely no regrets. A great mount for the price, and I have it now, not in a few weeks.

Very tough to beat at that price. I use one with a 10" Meade R on it and it does just fine.
