Would I be able to safely replace / modify it myself at home? If so, do I open the panel that the power / cables etc attach to or would it require more elaborate disassembling of the mount. In trying to move the LED out of the way (it was too bright) I ended up with no LED light at all after I tugged at it gently with a hook made of wire.

Yes, on the Atlas EQ-G the LED is just inside the compartment behind the power and hand control panel. I'm not entirely certain what holds it in place, looks to be a glue of some sort.
I just bought my Atlas EQ-G and I initially thought the LED was too bright, but I found you can decrease brightness from the hand controller. Have you thought about doing that before delving in to the challenges of modifying it?

That happens when you pull the wires off. (biting tongue)

I've recorded my misery on another thread. I can't get the Synscan hand controller to work with the mount and am running it through EQMOD and a gamepad controller. Unfortunately it seems I will need to open up that panel. I'll post here what happens next.

Thanks for your help. I was able to open the side panel and get to the LED. I snipped the wires and attached a small LED i got from Radio Shack and put some electrical tape on the connections and some superglue on the wires holding it onto the circular piece holding it. I tested it before closing the panel and again a little while ago. It is perfect: just enough red to isolate Polaris. I am very pleased and appreciate your help very much.
