While I went with the AVX, a friend of mine decided to take advantage of the CG5 fire sale. He also bought a polar finder scope with it. After removing the cover on the CG5 to insert the polar scope, he discovered there is something already threaded into the mount preventing the insertion of the polar scope. This thing looks like a minature eyepiece holder. Its diameter is smaller than the polar scope tube. We both came to the conclusion that this needs to be removed before inserting the polar scope. My question is what is the purpspose of this thing? I can only assume it was intended to hold a smaller polar scope. The polar scope that my friend bought is the correct polar scope. The box was labeled for CG5 and he doubled checked the part number on the Celestron site.

That was used with the older style polar scope. The old style fit inside that piece and was adjusted using the 3 screws.

Thanks Stan.

That is what I thought. We were curious as to what it was. Seems to me like it is costing Celestron to put that obsolete thing on there. But then it would probably cost them more to remove it from the production process.

I think the CG-4 still uses the "penlight" polarfinder. It was first sold as an option with the Vixen Polaris.

Cg-4 uses a similar new style finder like the CG-5 , but the thread size is smaller.

:foreheadslap:I'm the friend that bought the CG-5. The fixture in question is indeed for an older style polar scope. It unscrews with the application of sufficient force. The polar scope then screws right in!
