From what I have read, due to the aerodynamics of the satellite, it remained remarkable stable until terminal reentry. I suspect that contributed to its break up as well.

Robert,no worries. I was just curious about the pic since the timing, path etc were coincidental with GOCE. Plus, I have never seen a plane on that path. Thanks to all who contributed comments.
