Would like to get some 5 minute exposures on a new mount.
If $1500 or so was my budget, would a sirius/atlas be better unguided or a CG-5/LXD-75 with a guider?

I thank a cgem and a guider would give you the 5 minut exposure you are looking for. new around $1700.00 or used
somewhere in the ballpark of $1400.00.

You're gonna need a guider with an Atlas unless you find an amazing instance of one. I'm not trying to be difficult but the chances of a 5min unguided exposure with an Atlas is low. Others may feel differently, but mine was not capable of that.
At 2000mm (same as an 8" SCT) there aren't many mounts that won't require guiding. My Tak NJP is a sweet mount, but I wouldn't shoot at 2000mm without guiding it.
