Well last night was first light for the new observatory!! Here is my first light image. Finally being able to image from the observatory was great!! All the work and expense was definitely worthwhile!

Thanks for the comments everyone! I am going to try and get some pictures of more of the construction details posted in case some of it will help someone else or give them some inspiration/ideas. Having an observatory is really great and I can see that it will really increase the amount of observing and imaging I will do now that I don't have to spend so much time setting up and tearing down not to mention the wear and tear on my back from lugging all that equipment in and out every night.

The observatory is already paying off in productivity! I got in a second straight night of imaging - pretty rare for me lately. Clouds cut the session short so I didn't get as much total exposure time as I wanted but at least when the clouds rolled in all I had to do was turn off the power, close the roof and roll into bed!

Here is my "2nd light" image - the IC1318/Gamma Cygni area:

Great pictures, John!

This is EXACTLY why I'm having my OBS built in two weeks (by BYO/Scott)... so that *I* can hopefully start doing what you are obviously already so proficient at...

I'm to the point where I can't sleep for the waiting!

Dave,

You will definitely not regret getting an observatory built. No matter what kind of observing you do (or imaging) I think you will do more of it and enjoy it more with an observatory. Good luck and enjoy your new observatory when it is done!

Dave,

Awesome! I bet you will be one happy astronomer after the weekend! Be sure to post some pics.

Manie,

Thanks for the compliments!!

I have been posting these in the DSLR forum - I normally post my images there since I image with a DSLR. In fact the images here are actually links to attachments to posts in that forum.

This must be observatory season - it looks like lots of people are just starting or finishing observatories. One of the guys in our local club just got his finished a couple of weeks ago. Good luck and clear dark skies to everybody when your observatories are finished!
